When it first started developing an iron ore mine in Bloom Lake near Fermont, the Consolidated Thompson (CLM) mining company planned on extracting approximately 8 million tons of ore annually. This ore was transported by rail from the processing plant to the handling terminal. The project thereby consisted in building a new terminal that would serve to empty out wagons, store material and load ships to ship the ore by boat.
